Brake Safety Week Lands August 23. One Bad Drum Can Park You.

For seven days starting August 23, every scale house and inspection pull-off in North America turns into a brake shop. CVSA's Brake Safety Week runs August 23 through 29, and trained inspectors in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will be looking at one system above all others: your brakes.

Here is the part that hits your day. Any truck with a brake-related out-of-service violation gets parked on the spot and stays parked until the problem is fixed. Last year inspectors ran 15,175 inspections in a single week and put 15.1% of those trucks out of service for brakes. That is roughly one in seven, and the most common reason was simple: 20% or more of the service brakes on the truck or combination were defective or out of adjustment.

This year the inspectors have a specific target. The emphasis is drums and rotors, the parts most drivers never think about until one cracks. A drum or rotor that is worn, cracked, or coming apart does two things. It kills your stopping power, and a broken piece can fly off at highway speed and put the car behind you in the hospital. That is why it is an automatic out-of-service call, not a warning.

How can you prepare? Run a focused pre-trip each day. Before August 23, get under the truck and check the drums and rotors for cracks, deep scoring, and heat damage. Listen for the low-air warning, feel for a truck that pulls to one side, and fix a soft pedal now instead of explaining it at the scale. A violation does not just cost you the day. It lands on your CSA score and your carrier's, and it follows you.

None of this is a surprise, which is the point. The inspectors already told you the week and the target. Roll in with brakes you would trust on an 8% grade and Brake Safety Week is just another Tuesday. Roll in guessing, and you could be the one in seven watching everybody else drive off.

Mile Markers

Where the numbers landed this week.

Diesel: $5.257/gal, down about 9 cents on the week. That snaps a four-week climb, and it still sits about $1.50 above where it was a year ago. (EIA)

Spot rates (all-in, national average): Van about $2.95, Reefer about $3.38, Flatbed about $3.60 per mile. Linehaul softened for a fifth straight week, but all-in rates held roughly flat as fuel surcharges stayed high, with reefer and flatbed even ticking up a couple cents. All three are still running well above a year ago. (DAT)

Wisconsin Reopens Two I-43 Rest Areas With Live Parking Signs. Wisconsin cut the ribbon August 5 on two rebuilt rest areas along I-43 near Denmark and Maribel, lifting each site from 20 truck spaces to 56 and adding a staging area for oversize and overweight loads. The $20.4 million project also put up signs on I-43 that show how many truck spots are open before you pull in. If you run the Green Bay corridor, that is real overnight room plus a heads-up on availability. Read more on WisDOT

DAT Sees an Early Peak, Then a Fall Air Pocket. Spot linehaul rates have now slipped five weeks running, with van, reefer, and flatbed all down around 20 cents since early July. DAT's read is that the record wave of imports rushing in ahead of tariff changes is pulling freight forward into an early peak season, likely followed by a volume air pocket in the fourth quarter. The planning takeaway: book the freight in front of you now, because the back half of the year may get thinner. Read more on AJOT

Paccar is recalling close to 6,000 model-year 2027 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks built this summer over an electrical problem that can cause the engine to lose power.
