The Ramp Problem Is Worse Than You Think

We drove past a rest area on I-75 in Adairsville, GA the other night. Both ramps clogged with 30+ trucks. The rest area beyond capacity and barely navigable. Every driver and motorist passing through is at risk.

A new nationwide study from Altitude by Geotab and HNTB just put numbers behind what every driver already knows. Over 2.2 million parking events, including 300,000+ long-duration stops, happen on U.S. highway ramps every year. The typical driver parking on a ramp has driven 520 miles, been on the road for nearly 10 hours, and is running out of legal driving time. They park on the shoulder of a highway ramp, inches from high-speed traffic, just to comply with the law and get some sleep.

The study identified the worst hotspots: Indianapolis, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, and Chicago. Peak demand for unauthorized ramp parking hits Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Highway shoulders aren't built to support a 33,000+ pound truck sitting for 10 hours. This is a systematic capacity problem.

4-Fatality Indiana Crash Exposes Chameleon Carrier Network

A horrific crash on State Road 67 near the Ohio state line killed four people on Tuesday. FreightWaves reporting has linked the truck to a network of carriers operating out of the Chicago metro area that share addresses, phone numbers, and even the same trucks under different DOT numbers — 139 shared VINs across the network. 91 prior crashes on the books. This is why enforcement matters.

Truckload Market Showing Unusual Volatility

Spot rates hit $2.71/mile in January, with winter weather amplifying tightness in a market already losing capacity. Carrier exits continue quietly — fewer trucks, thinner replacement pipelines, tighter margins. FreightWaves analysts say the market is structurally different from prior years and shippers should plan accordingly.
