Diesel Tops $5 for the First Time Since 2022

U.S. diesel prices have surpassed $5 per gallon after Iran blocked most oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, sending refined fuel markets into shock. Goldman Sachs analysts say diesel and jet fuel are being hit harder than crude, with European diesel breaching $200 per barrel for the first time since 2022. For truckers already running tight margins, the timing heading into MATS week is rough.

200,000 Immigrant Drivers Begin Losing CDLs

A new Trump administration rule that took effect March 16 will block immigrant truck drivers from renewing their commercial driver's licenses as they expire. Analysts estimate up to 200,000 drivers could be removed from the road over the coming years, representing roughly 5% of the total trucker workforce. Several states including California are pushing back, with immigrant rights groups warning of supply chain disruptions and higher consumer prices.

Spot Rates Post Seventh Straight Monthly Gain

DAT's February truckload data shows spot van rates climbing for the seventh consecutive month, now at $2.19 per mile. Three winter storms in February tightened available capacity and accelerated a trend that's been building since last summer. The spread between spot and contract rates has narrowed to its smallest gap since March 2022, a signal the market is moving toward balance.

upreme Court Broker Liability Ruling Expected This Summer

Oral arguments wrapped up in March in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, a case that could fundamentally change how freight brokers are held liable for carrier negligence. Federal circuits are currently split on whether state tort law applies to brokers. A decision is expected by summer and could reshape how brokers vet and contract with carriers nationwide.
