Tale Lites Issue 1

First edition promo code inside!

Welcome to Tale Lites!

My name is Michael Lombard and I recently joined the Truck Parking Club team to run our Partner Program. I served in the Marine Corps from 2008-2012, and entered into the freight industry in 2017. After three years in the warehouse, I went over the road for three years to honor my family’s name. I hauled van and open deck freight. While on the road, I became passionate about fitness and dedicated myself to providing drivers everywhere with useful fitness tips.

Going forward, you can expect a new edition of Tale Lites to appear in your inbox every Monday around 8pm Eastern Time.

Expect to see:

  • Stories from my time on the road

  • Driver fitness tips

  • Content from our partners

  • Special Tale Lites promo codes (first one is below!)

  • Info on our Partner Program

  • And More!

I want to hear from you! For Driver Submissions, questions, and comments contact me at: [email protected] or Text me directly at 423-275-2444

Lombard Trucking - An American Trucking Story

I-84 in Waterbury, CT

I mentioned above that I became an OTR driver to honor my families’ name. I’m fortunate to have deep roots in trucking. That story is below.

Anthony and Angeline Lombard from Naples, and Caserta, Italy gave birth to Nicholas Lombard on August 9th, 1891. In 1898 they relocated to Connecticut where they gave birth to their second son Joseph Lombard. By 1904 the Lombards had finally settled in Waterbury, CT. At 13 years old, Nicholas was helping his father load a drive a horse drawn wagon with sand and building materials to construction sites. He later began to deliver ice to restaurants throughout the Litchfield Hills, with the help of his 8 year old brother. In 1919, Joseph would drive a “jitney” for local citizens at 5 cents per ride, but finally in 1923 with two old trucks the brothers began their transportation business. One of the first to challenge the railroads who had monopolized the freight industry, they navigated through the Great Depression by expanding into “over the road” service. In 1932 Joseph drove a company truck for their historic first run from Waterbury to Philadelphia, PA. That expansion grew to owning 12 terminals in 7 states, from Baltimore to Portland, Maine, making them one of the largest motor carriers in the East.

As Lombard Bros. continued to grow it became impossible for the over 650 employees to know what was going on outside of their respective terminals. Lombard began producing TALE-LITES to increase the number of channels of communication around the company from the terminals to the main office. It was published to not only keep everyone in the company better informed, but also provide everyone a means of expressing opinions and ideas.

Shortly after deregulation, Lombard Bros. Inc was sold to North Penn Transfer in 1984, and with Lombard gone, that means Tale-Lites would also cease publication, until now! The trucking industry has rapidly changed since 1984, and with so much going on I am proud to honor the Lombard legacy and tradition of Tale-Lites, a newsletter to keep everyone in the industry better informed, and provide all drivers a means of expressing opinions and ideas.

Health Tip of the Week

Walking - The Gateway Drug to Fitness

If you haven’t been active for several years, don’t be fooled by thinking you need to all of a sudden become a 24/7 gym rat to start getting in better shape.

Going too hard, too fast can result in pain, injury, or disappointment from not being your “former self.” According to the NIH at 9,000 steps a day, the chance of dying early is reduced by 60%. Walking 7,000 steps lowers one’s chances of cardiovascular disease by 51%.

You can log this time walking during pre-trip, parking far from the truck stop doors, sitting at docks, and on your 10 hour break. When you find yourself with 5 minutes, use that for movement.

When it comes to burning overall body fat, walking puts your heart rate in what’s called Zone 2, where energy consumed for walking is primarily coming from your fat stores. You can quite literally walk your way into a better life.
