Nashville Sets Sights on Truck Parking Enforcement

-Lombard

In Nashville, city officials are reaping what they sow when it comes to trucks that have taken to parking on local roads. Cities like Nashville are always shrugging their shoulders for something that has been a nationwide issue going on for years.

Councilwoman Joy Styles recently addressed growing complaints about semis parking along key roadways like Old Hickory Blvd, Murfreesboro Road, and Old Franklin Road. While some residents are frustrated by the sight of big rigs lining the streets, Styles says it’s not just a case of drivers ignoring rules — they’re reacting to a serious infrastructure gap.

👉 Nashville Metro code prohibits truck parking on city streets, day or night, unless it’s for loading or unloading. But Styles now acknowledges that the sudden spike in truck parking began after the closure of the TA Travel Center near downtown.

That location, which shut down in spring 2023, used to offer 167 truck parking spots. With that gone, truckers are left without a safe, legal place to park, forcing them to find the nearest shoulder or pull-off near the interstate just to take a federally mandated break.

🧠 From the Councilwoman: Her Post on Social Media

We have all been annoyed with the seemingly overnight appearance of tractor trailer trucks along Old Hickory Boulevard, Murfreesboro Rd and Old Franklin Rd. I have been speaking with @nashvilledot over the last few months about what we can do. Without question, they are a pain. They are unsightly and impact visibility.”

She added that Nashville’s traffic engineering team will be heading out this week to assess visibility concerns and decide where to install new "No Parking" signs. But she also acknowledged the deeper problem: there’s simply nowhere else for these trucks to go.

🛑 Tale Lites Take:

Parking bans without alternatives don’t solve problems, they just shift them onto drivers.
This is yet another example of policy failing to match the reality of over the road life.

I’ll keep an eye on Nashville’s next move, but let’s be clear: until cities start planning for the logistics that keep them alive, stories like this will only multiply.

DOT Compliance Corner - MC Number Clarification

-Santiago Talamantez

FMCSA to Retire MC Numbers by October 1 — Here’s What You Really Need to Know

The FMCSA recently announced that MC numbers will be officially phased out by October 1st. While the change is real, some of the social media chatter surrounding it has led to major confusion — so let’s clear things up.

 What’s actually happening?
The FMCSA is eliminating MC numbers to strengthen fraud prevention, especially in cases where carriers use another company’s MC on load boards to skirt poor safety records or hide red flags in the SMS database.

 What’s not happening?
They are not eliminating the requirement for operating authority. That’s still 100% mandatory if you’re a for-hire interstate carrier.

Some folks have misinterpreted the headline “MC numbers are going away” to mean authority is no longer required. That’s flat-out wrong. The MC number was just one way to identify that a carrier had the proper for-hire status. Starting October, your USDOT number will become the primary ID used to verify federal operating authority.

⚠️ Why This Matters:

  • You still need operating authority to haul freight in interstate commerce.

  • Operating without it can get you placed Out of Service on the spot — especially if you're loaded.

  • This change simplifies your ID numbers — you’ll no longer need to juggle both USDOT and MC #s.

📝 Other Important Notes:

  • MC numbers were never required to be displayed on your truck, and after October, they’ll be obsolete anyway.

  • State rules still apply. For example, Texas requires interstate carriers to register for a TXDMV certificate in addition to UCR. Make sure you check your own state’s intrastate requirements.

📌 Bottom Line:
MC numbers may be going away, but compliance isn’t. Make sure you understand what your USDOT number now represents — and don’t get caught operating without valid authority.

Health Tip of the Week

🥪 Health Tip of the Week: Keep Your Gut in Gear

Preventing GI Issues on the Road

Heartburn, bloating, constipation — they’re more common in trucking than you think. GI disorders can throw off your day and your drive. Here’s how to keep your digestive system running smoothly:

 1. Stick to a Schedule When You Can

Try to eat meals at regular intervals instead of skipping and then binging. Your gut likes routine — even if your route isn’t.

 2. Hydrate More Than You Think You Need To

Dehydration is a top cause of constipation. Aim for at least half a gallon (64 oz) of water a day — more in hot weather or if you drink coffee.

 3. Choose Fiber-Rich Snacks

Fuel up on things like:

  • Mixed nuts

  • Apples or bananas

  • Oatmeal packets

  • Whole grain wraps

They help keep your system moving — unlike greasy fast food, which can slow things down.

 4. Move When You Can

Even 5–10 minutes of walking or stretching during stops helps digestion. Sitting too long compresses your gut and slows everything down.

 5. Watch the Caffeine and Antacids

Too much coffee or relying on antacids can mess with your stomach’s acid balance. Try cutting back slowly if you’re dealing with acid reflux.
