🚛 Tennessee Company petitions for Legal Status Check for new CDL’s

With the big conversations going on surrounding English Language Proficiency and Non-Domiciled CDL’s, a Tennessee based compliance company called DOTReady, just filed a petition with the FMCSA asking for some pretty big changes to how CDLs are issued and how drivers are getting screened.

Their three main requests:

  1. Cut driver application work history from 10 years down to 3 years (this matches what carriers are already required to check).

  2. Expand the pre employment screening program to flag safety related terminations, but with a rebuttal process so drivers can defend themselves.

  3. Strengthen CDL legal status verification by tying the process into Department of Homeland Security databases.

That last one comes in the wake of the horrible accident in Florida that we covered in Tale Lites, and has been on national news. To review, it happened back on August 12 when truck driver, Harjinder Singh, pulled an illegal U-turn that led to a wreck killing three people. Singh was later arrested for vehicular homicide. Why it sounded off so many alarms is from when investigators said he may have been issued a full CDL in Washington by mistake before later getting a non-domiciled CDL in California.

DOTReady argues this is exactly the kind of gap that lets unqualified or undocumented drivers slip through the cracks.

Founder Tyna Bryan said this:

“This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for stronger federal verification processes to confirm CDL holders’ legal eligibility and qualifications.”

For now, the petition hasn’t been published in the Federal Register, but if FMCSA takes it up, I will be sure to post about it in Tale Lites so readers can add their comments!

🚨 Shippers Say IMO Net-Zero Plan Could Cost $300B

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is pushing ahead with its big climate move: a net-zero ideology that would make ships pay levies on their emissions. The goal is net zero for global shipping by 2050, with the plan set for formal adoption next month.

These groups love to make lofty plans, and big promises to save the world, but then reality comes in. That reality is the companies you want to change have no physical way of actually doing it in the time allotted, especially when the technology isn’t there. A group of shipping companies that represent more than 1,200 vessels, is warning the framework could pile up $20–30 billion a year in costs by 2030, ecploding to $300 billion by 2035 if fleets miss emissions targets by even 10%.

The U.S. has come out against the plan calling it nothing more than a “global carbon tax.” Regardless, most countries voted in favor of it earlier this year, and the International Chamber of Shipping (which represents over 80% of the world’s merchant fleet) is also supporting it.

The shipper group, which includes Stolt Tankers, Frontline Plc, and Saudi Arabia’s Bahri, says the framework won’t actually help shipping decarbonize and could unfairly burden the industry, which also means the consumers, with higher costs. They’re calling for “realistic trajectories” and measures that won’t fuel more inflation.

The push for green energy always seems to have ulterior motives, like we saw with Cash for Clunkers. Innovation will always come, but through force means world leaders are going to pick and choose the winners, and box out any other plausible ideas.

Health Tip of the Week - Shoulder Mobility

Last week we talked shoulders, let’s talk about your ankles. Stiff ankles can lead to knee and back pain, and even make it harder to balance when lifting or climbing in and out of the cab. Keep them moving with a few of these tips:

  • Ankle circles: While seated, lift one foot off the ground and draw big circles with your toes, 10 each direction per side.

  • Calf stretch: Stand facing your rig, hands on the door, one foot back — press your heel into the ground for 20–30 seconds.

  • Heel-to-toe rocks: Shift from standing on your heels to standing on your toes for 10 reps to wake up the joints.

Strong, mobile ankles mean better stability whether at work or at home! Share this with anyone you know who may work a sedentary job.
