Texas Town Hall - Level Up Your Trucking Business

Truck Parking Advocacy in Action
On February 22nd, 2025 I attended a Town Hall in Austin, TX that was put on by my Congressman who represents the 35th District in the US House of Representatives. I came prepared to advise the Congressman and the fellow members of my community how paramount the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act (HR2367) is for the 35th District. HR2367 is a bill that was introduced by Representative Mike Bost (R-IL-12) almost 2 years ago in March of 2023. The entire text of the bill can be found here, but essentially it allocates funds to the DOT to address the Nationwide truck parking shortage. It also allows entities granted money to work with private entities in order to address the ongoing truck parking shortage. Truck Parking is a nationwide issue, but also a problem right here in the 35th District which includes a section of the I-35 Corridor between Austin and San Antonio where trucks are already parking in neighborhoods. I went on KXAN back in 2023 to talk about it, and now approaching the two year anniversary of the bill it’s most recent status is that it has been sent to Union Calendar, which means it can be put on the legislative schedule, but doesn’t guarantee it.
Overall I was disappointed with how the Town Hall was ran. My Congressman is Representative Greg Casar, who is a progressive democrat that used to serve on the Austin City Council. In his own words he said that it is on the District to hold him accountable to do his job, and that he is a representative, not an employee of a certain business or party. You have to play the ball where it lies, and when it comes to advocacy it means whatever political party your representative belongs can’t stop you from engaging with them. My disappointment stems from the attendees who were given the microphone to speak. Every question was essentially talking in circles about the same thing: the current President and Elon Musk. No one asked about bills, or ideas they had they wanted the Representative to bring to Congress. I’d go as far to say that they weren’t questions, they were more so complaints and grievances. By all means they definitely should be expressed at a Town Hall, but for the entire event to circle around it is just a tad redundant and unproductive. I came prepared with bills, data, and talking points that not just the Congressman should know, but the fellow members of my community. Fortunately I stuck around, and was able to actually get a few minutes with Mr. Casar, who was beyond open and receptive to everything I was saying to him. He said “This is something we definitely need to talk about, because I know truckers are always getting railroaded.” He explicitly pointed out his head of staff to get her contact information to set up a meeting. My biggest takeaway is that democracy is more than just showing up to the ballot box, it requires a persistent and relentless effort. It’s a long game, and as an endurance athlete and driver I’m equipped for the long haul.

Health Tip of the Week
Prioritizing Sleep
Long hours and tight schedules can make quality sleep tough, but it’s one of the most important things you can do for your health and safety. Lack of sleep doesn’t just make you tired—it slows your reaction time, clouds your judgment, and increases your risk of serious health issues.
🚛 Why Sleep Matters for Truckers:
Stay Safe: Drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving. Rested drivers are alert drivers.
Boost Health: Quality sleep lowers the risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. It also reduces the risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia
Feel Better: More rest means better mood, energy, and focus during long hauls.
✅ Sleep Tips for the Road:
Stick to a Schedule: Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep
Create a Sleep-Friendly Cab: Use blackout curtains, a supportive mattress topper, and a white noise machine to block out distractions.
Limit Stimulants: Cut back on caffeine 6 hours before bed and avoid heavy meals late at night.
Wind Down: Power down electronics 30 minutes before bed—blue light disrupts your natural sleep cycle.
