🛑 Your USDOT Number Isn't for Sale

The FMCSA has issued a big warning: Selling, leasing, or purchasing a USDOT or MC number is a fast track to losing your authority.

In a bulletin released March 13, the agency clarified that these numbers are tied to your legal identity, just like a Social Security number or a driver’s license. Unless it’s part of a legitimate, documented corporate merger or acquisition, those numbers stay with the original owner.

Why the Crackdown?

The FMCSA is seeing a rise in "grey market" transactions where individuals try to bypass the registration process by buying existing numbers. Here’s what happens if you get caught:

  • Immediate Inactivation: The FMCSA will kill the USDOT number on the spot.

  • Revocation: All related registrations and operating authorities will be revoked.

  • Legal Liability: If you "sell" your number improperly and that buyer gets into a crash, you could still be held legally responsible for the damages.

The "Ghost" Liability Risk

Brittany Murphy from OOIDA’s Permits and Licensing Department highlighted this possible scenario: An owner-operator sold his authority, only to be sued years later when the new user caused a major accident. Because the transfer wasn't handled through official corporate channels, the original owner was still the "person of record."

The Rule of Thumb: If a stranger or a "consultant" offers to buy your old MC number online, walk away. It belongs to your legal entity forever.

What Should You Do?

If you have sold your authority in the past, now is the time to double check the paperwork. Ensure the transfer was handled as a formal corporate transaction and that the FMCSA records reflect the change.

Tale Lites Throwback

Some Safety Hints from 1966. What do you think?

🚛 A Trucker’s Road to Mar-a-Lago?

-Rob Carpenter

A Romanian immigrant who once ran a major US trucking operation is now at the center of a story raising eyebrows across the industry.

Dragos Sprinceana built a fleet that grew to 350 trucks. But federal enforcement records from the FMCSA show the operation was tied to 150 crashes, 10 fatalities, and $889,630 in unpaid safety fines before regulators issued out of service orders.

Yet while regulators were taking action, Sprinceana appeared to be gaining access to powerful political circles — attending events with figures like Matt Gaetz and posting photos from Mar-a-Lago alongside senior officials.

Campaign records show he and his wife donated over $134,000 to political campaigns between 2020 and 2024.

Sprinceana has not been charged with fraud. But the case highlights a question the trucking industry continues to wrestle with:

How does someone facing serious safety enforcement still find their way into the halls of power?

🩺 Health Tip of the Week: Clocks Forward, Get More Vitamin D

Drivers spend long hours behind the wheel, which means limited sunlight exposure, and that can lead to low Vitamin D levels. Even if the sun is shining through a windshield, it’s more like a greenhouse effect

Vitamin D plays a key role in:

  • 🦴 Bone strength

  • 🛡️ Immune system support

  • 💪 Muscle function

  • 🧠 Mood and energy levels

Studies suggest a large percentage of Americans are deficient, and drivers may be at even higher risk because they spend most of their day inside the cab.

Simple ways to boost Vitamin D:

  • ☀️ Get 10–20 minutes of sunlight when you stop for breaks

  • 🐟 Eat foods like salmon, tuna, eggs, and fortified milk

  • 💊 Consider a Vitamin D3 supplement, especially in winter months

Even stepping out of the truck for a quick walk during a fuel stop can help your body produce this important nutrient.

Long Time Trucker Writes Book on the State of American Trucking Industry

Is there a quiet war being waged against America’s truck drivers?

That’s the argument behind End of the Road: Inside the War on Truckers, a new book by longtime driver and writer Gord Magill. Magill claims the industry that once represented freedom and independence is being attacked on all fronts, from government regulations, in cab surveillance technology, corporate consolidation, and the push toward autonomous trucks.

God Magill has decades of experience including 4 seasons on ice roads in Canada, road trains in Australia, and over the road in the US. He argues that drivers today face tighter control, shrinking margins, and a future where human truckers may be pushed out altogether.

If you drive a truck, have driven, or have a family member who drives then this book is a must read.
