Traffic Deaths Down - UCR Fees Rising?! Make Your Comments Heard!

The Winner of our MATS Raffle Has Been Announced!
🚛 Are Safer Roads Ahead? Traffic Deaths Are Dropping
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is projecting a nearly 7% drop in traffic fatalities for 2025. This would mark the 15th straight quarterly decline, and one of the largest decreases ever recorded. What makes this statistic worth paying attention to is the fact that Americans aren’t driving any less, but more miles in general.
📉 What’s Driving the Improvement?
According to the NHTSA and the Federal Highway Administration, these few key factors are helping push numbers down:
Increased enforcement and stronger partnerships with law enforcement
Crackdowns on unqualified and unsafe truck drivers
Safer vehicles becoming more accessible
Ongoing education around risky driving behaviors
Sean Duffy emphasized that enforcement has been a major focus, especially targeting unsafe drivers and raising awareness around distracted and impaired driving.
🗺️ Where Are Things Improving?
Fatalities are trending downward in:
39 states
Washington, D.C.
Puerto Rico
📊 2024 Data Shows Progress Too
Looking back at 2024, the trend was already heading in the right direction:
Overall traffic deaths declined year over year
Fatality rate per miles driven also dropped
Large-truck occupant fatalities decreased
⚠️ Areas Still Moving the Wrong Way
Some categories actually saw increases:
Crashes involving older drivers
SUV occupant fatalities
Distracted driving is still the most important issue
In 2024 alone:
3,208 people were killed
315,000+ injured in distracted driving crashes
According to the United States Department of Transportation:
Someone is injured every 30 minutes
Someone is killed about every 2.5 hours
That’s why the NHTSA is pushing a nationwide awareness campaign through mid-April.
Enforcement is tightening and the numbers are improving, but the biggest risks on the road remain the same for drivers:
Distracted driving
Impaired driving
Not wearing a seatbelt

💸 UCR Fees Set to Jump Again in 2027
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is proposing a 20% increase in Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) fees for 2027, following a recommendation from the UCR Board.
Depending on your fleet size, that increase could range from a few extra bucks nto over $9,000 more per year.
🚛 What Is UCR?
The Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) is an annual fee required for most motor carriers with an active USDOT number.
You still have to pay it even if you’re not actively operating
It applies whether you run interstate or not
It covers carriers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico
📊 What the Increase Looks Like
Here’s how the proposed jump breaks down:
Fleet Size | 2026 Fee | Proposed 2027 Fee |
|---|---|---|
0–2 trucks | $46 | $55 |
3–5 trucks | $138 | $167 |
6–20 trucks | $276 | $333 |
21–100 trucks | $963 | $1,163 |
101–1,000 trucks | $4,592 | $5,548 |
1,001+ trucks | $44,836 | $54,165 |
Not massive for small fleets, but for larger operations it looks like a big jump
🏛️ Not Every State Plays Along
Even though all states enforce UCR, not all of them participate in the program.
Non-participating states include:
Arizona
Florida
Hawaii
Maryland
Nevada
New Jersey
Oregon
Vermont
Wyoming
Washington, D.C.
⚠️ OOIDA Calls It a “Slush Fund”
They’ve labeled the UCR system a “slush fund” for states, arguing it’s being used to:
Fund enforcement against truckers
Help states unlock additional federal dollars
Keep surplus revenue instead of returning it
OOIDA essentially thinks that the entire UCR system has outlived its purpose and should be scrapped.
🧾 Why Does UCR Exist?
UCR was created by Congress in 2005 to:
Maintain a national registry of interstate carriers
Replace a patchwork of state level systems
🗣️ You Can Still Speak Up
The FMCSA is accepting public comments on the proposed increase for 30 days.

🩺 Health Tip of the Week: Walk After you Eat!
As the weather gets warmer and Tale Lites grows it is always good to revisit these tips for you drivers. These were habits I stick with that helped me on my weight loss journey over the road!
You’ve probably heard “walk after you eat,” but the new insight is how and when you do it can help even more.
Instead of a long walk later,
👉 Take a 10-minute walk within 15–30 minutes after eating
⚙️ Why It Works
This taps into something called Postprandial Glucose Control.
A short walk right after eating:
Reduces blood sugar spikes
Improves insulin sensitivity
Helps digestion
Lowers fat storage from that meal
This can often be more effective than a longer walk done hours later.
🚛 Why This Is Perfect for Drivers
No gym needed
Works at truck stops, rest areas, or parking lots
Can be done in jeans and boots
Helps offset long hours of sitting
💥 Simple Rule to Follow
“Eat → Wait 10–20 min → Walk 10 min”
That’s it.
No tracking. No apps. No overthinking.
Long Time Trucker Writes Book on the State of American Trucking Industry

Is there a quiet war being waged against America’s truck drivers?
That’s the argument behind End of the Road: Inside the War on Truckers, a new book by longtime driver and writer Gord Magill. Magill claims the industry that once represented freedom and independence is being attacked on all fronts, from government regulations, in cab surveillance technology, corporate consolidation, and the push toward autonomous trucks.
God Magill has decades of experience including 4 seasons on ice roads in Canada, road trains in Australia, and over the road in the US. He argues that drivers today face tighter control, shrinking margins, and a future where human truckers may be pushed out altogether.
If you drive a truck, have driven, or have a family member who drives then this book is a must read.
