✈️ Commercial Jet Strikes Semi During Newark Landing Approach

An incident unfolded Sunday afternoon near Newark Liberty International Airport when a commercial airliner clipped a tractor trailer while attempting to land.

According to reports, United Airlines Flight 169 was arriving from Venice around 2 p.m. on May 3 when the aircraft’s landing gear reportedly struck both a light pole and a semi truck traveling along the New Jersey Turnpike during final approach.

The impact caused the tractor trailer to overturn, sending the driver to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A falling light pole also reportedly struck a Jeep traveling nearby.

Despite the collision, the aircraft was able to land safely and taxi to the gate without injuries to passengers or crew.

In a statement following the incident, United Airlines said the aircraft made contact with a light pole during its final approach into Newark and confirmed the plane landed safely. The airline also noted the aircraft is being inspected for damage and that the flight crew has been temporarily removed from service pending the investigation.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board has directed the airline to preserve and hand over both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder as investigators work to determine exactly what happened.

A preliminary report from investigators is expected within 30 days.

Tale Lites Throwback

Some tips from 1966!

🚛 California Opens the Door Wider for Autonomous Trucks

The California DMV has officially adopted new regulations that allow both light and heavy duty autonomous vehicles to be tested and eventually deployed across the state. The changes come after months of public review and growing concerns over how self-driving vehicles interact with emergency responders and real world traffic situations.

The new rules were first proposed in late 2025 after several incidents involving autonomous vehicles disrupting traffic, blocking emergency crews, and even driving into active crime scenes.

One incident that drew national attention involved an autonomous vehicle making an illegal U-turn during a DUI stop in San Bruno. Police pulled the vehicle over, but because no human driver was inside, officers couldn’t issue a citation under existing California law.

The new regulations aim to close gaps like that while also giving AV manufacturers a clearer path toward commercial operations.

🔍 What the New Rules Include

California’s updated AV framework now:

  • Requires companies to start testing with a human safety driver before progressing to fully driverless operations

  • Gives law enforcement the ability to issue notices of noncompliance when AVs commit moving violations

  • Requires updated emergency response plans, manual override access, and 30-second response communication systems for first responders

  • Allows emergency officials to issue “geofencing” orders that force AV fleets to leave restricted areas within two minutes

  • Establishes standards and licensing requirements for remote operators and assistants

  • Expands crash reporting and vehicle-mile tracking requirements

  • Gives the DMV authority to place restrictions on AV companies if public safety becomes an issue

  • Removes California’s previous ban on autonomous vehicles over 10,001 pounds, opening the door for heavy-duty autonomous trucks

However, autonomous trucks will still be required to stop at weigh stations and follow all existing state and federal commercial vehicle laws.

The rules also allow certain autonomous transit vehicles up to 14,001 pounds to operate through universities and public agencies.

⚠️ Industry Concerns Remain

OOIDA continues to urge caution, arguing that autonomous trucks have not yet proven they can safely operate at scale in real-world freight environments.

For drivers, the concern isn’t just the technology, it’s whether law makers are moving faster than the industry can safely adapt. These AV companies are propped up by fundraising and “creating ROI” so it is their incentive to get these on roads as fast as possible, not as safe as possible.

Some portions of the new California rules take effect immediately, while others will roll out over the coming months.

🩺 Health Tip of the Week: Sleep

I join SiriusXM RoadDog every week to talk Driver health, and this week we discussed sleep, and sleep patterns. Just because you “think you’re good” with 5 to 6 hours, that doesn’t mean it’s actually good for you and your long term health. Someone overweight might have good bloodwork, that doesn’t mean being overweight is healthy. Neglecting proper sleep is bad for digestion, your immune system, and increases the risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia

✅ Avoid heavy meals 2–3 hours before bed
Late night meals can hurt sleep quality and cause acid reflux.

✅ Cut caffeine several hours before sleep
Energy drinks and coffee can stay in your system longer than you think.

✅ Keep your sleeper cool and dark
Lower temperatures and less light help your body fall asleep faster.

✅ Limit phone scrolling before bed
Blue light from screens can interfere with melatonin production.

✅ Try to sleep on a consistent schedule
Going to bed and waking up around the same time helps improve recovery.

✅ Don’t ignore constant fatigue
Heavy snoring, headaches, or always feeling exhausted could be signs of sleep apnea.

Getting in movement like walking after meals and before you go to sleep will also help! If you have an irregular sleep schedule talk to your doctor about Trazadone, a non-addictive and safe medication unlike Ambian and stronger sleep aids that won’t effect your CDL. Also if you sleep during daylight, an eye mask should be a must. Aim for 7-9 hours.

Long Time Trucker Writes Book on the State of American Trucking Industry

Is there a quiet war being waged against America’s truck drivers?

That’s the argument behind End of the Road: Inside the War on Truckers, a new book by longtime driver and writer Gord Magill. Magill claims the industry that once represented freedom and independence is being attacked on all fronts, from government regulations, in cab surveillance technology, corporate consolidation, and the push toward autonomous trucks.

God Magill has decades of experience including 4 seasons on ice roads in Canada, road trains in Australia, and over the road in the US. He argues that drivers today face tighter control, shrinking margins, and a future where human truckers may be pushed out altogether.

If you drive a truck, have driven, or have a family member who drives then this book is a must read.
