🚨 Criminals Target Holiday Weekends
Memorial Day Weekend specifically sticks out as a popular holiday weekend for cargo thieves to try their luck.
Cargo theft groups are expected to fire up operations during the holiday period, according to a new warning issued by security firm CargoNet.
The company says long weekends create the perfect environment for organized theft rings: loaded trailers sitting unattended, reduced staffing, delayed communication, and closed shipping facilities. And CargoNet has some data to back this up.
Over the past five Memorial Day weekends, CargoNet recorded 221 cargo theft incidents. 2025 alone accounted for 66 thefts, that was the highest total in the 5 year period.
The most commonly stolen freight included:
Food and beverages
Electronics
Vehicles and auto parts
Household goods
Apparel
No surprise that California, with large ports, lack of safe truck parking, and rail freight, led the nation in cargo thefts during the holiday stretch with 70 reported incidents. Texas came in second with 31, followed by Illinois, Georgia, and Florida.
But according to CargoNet Vice President Keith Lewis, this year’s threat goes beyond ordinary theft. Criminal groups are becoming more strategic and selective with the freight they target.
Instead of random trailer burglaries, many organized crews are now focusing on high-value loads and sophisticated fraud schemes designed to impersonate legitimate carriers or brokers.
CargoNet says thieves in 2026 have increasingly targeted:
Copper products
Meat and seafood
Beverages
Cosmetics
Automotive freight
Apparel
Cryptocurrency mining equipment
Networking hardware
Enterprise server components
Even though overall cargo theft incidents dropped slightly in the first quarter of 2026, total financial losses remain around the same, meaning thieves are stealing fewer loads, but the commodity is worth more money.
With freight volumes increasing ahead of the holiday weekend, everyone is urging carriers and drivers to avoid leaving loaded trailers unattended for extended periods, especially in high risk states like California and Texas.

📈 Spot Rates Explode After SCOTUS Broker Liability Ruling. Will They Stay?
Following up from last week’s Tale Lites covering the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, spot rates have been exploding. I’ve been seeing videos on social media from both drivers and brokers on it.
Truckload spot rates just surged to an all time high of $3.73 per mile, surpassing even the historic highs seen during the COVID freight boom.
And according to FreightWave’s CEO Craig Fuller, this may only be the beginning.
The 9-0 ruling fundamentally changed the legal landscape for freight brokers. The Supreme Court determined brokers can now be sued in state courts for negligent carrier selection, meaning the days of brokers acting as simple “middlemen” with limited liability protection may be over.
Across the industry, brokers are tightening carrier requirements, shippers are reevaluating relationships, and insurance markets are bracing for major premium increases.
The SCOTUS news just so happens to be colliding with an already tightening freight market. With nearshoring, manufacturing growth, and stricter compliance enforcement going on, is has been pulling capacity out of the market for the last several months. Now brokers are becoming far more cautious about who they book freight with, especially unknown carriers sourced through load boards.
According to Fuller, the biggest legal risk now centers around carriers with:
No operating history
Limited or no inspection records
No previous relationship with the broker
Even if a carrier is perfectly safe, brokers may struggle to prove they performed adequate due diligence if something goes wrong.
🚛 What’s Changing Right Now
Industry sources say several large brokerages have already stopped using certain high-risk carriers entirely.
Carriers with FMCSA “conditional” safety ratings are reportedly struggling to secure freight, while brokers are becoming much more selective about who they work with.
Meanwhile, many shippers are starting to shift freight toward larger brokers and managed transportation providers that have stronger compliance systems and deeper insurance protection.
The companies expected to benefit most include:
Large national brokerages
Established 3PLs
Well-insured asset carriers
Verified carrier-vetting platforms
The biggest losers could be small brokers operating on thin margins and relying heavily on unknown spot-market carriers.
💰 Insurance Costs Could Become the Next Crisis
One of the largest concerns moving forward is insurance. At this point, billboard attorneys are foaming at the mouth.
Early estimates suggest broker liability premiums could rise anywhere from 3 to 10 times current levels.
And according to industry executives, the danger isn’t just those massive nuclear verdicts, it’s the flood of smaller lawsuits and nuisance claims that could pile up admin costs. Some experts believe those added legal costs alone could increase expenses by more than $20 per load.
⚠️ Big Picture
The Supreme Court ruling may end up becoming one of the most transformative trucking decisions since deregulation in 1980.
For years, brokers competed primarily on price and speed. Now risk management, carrier vetting, and compliance may become the most important factors in freight brokerage.
The spot market is tightening, rates are climbing, and capacity is becoming more selective by the day, and where you should always be cautious and plan ahead, it didn’t stop one executive telling the CEO of FreightWaves this week:
“You haven’t seen anything yet.”

🩺 Health Tip of the Week: Summer Driving Tips
Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start of summer. Bookmark this newsletter so you can keep ALL of these tips handy while you’re out there working hard.
Stay Ahead of Hydration By the time you feel thirsty, you're already behind. Aim for water consistently throughout the day. Lay off the energy drinks and heavy caffeine, they dehydrate you faster than the heat already is. First symptom of heat exhaustion: Fatigue
Watch for Heat Exhaustion Spending time loading, unloading, or even just walking a hot yard can push your body hard. Dizziness, heavy sweating, nausea, and a rapid heartbeat are all warning signs. If you feel them coming on, get to shade, get cool, and drink water, don't try to push through it.
Keep the Cab Cool Parking in shade whenever possible, using a reflective windshield cover, and cracking a window can make a real difference in cab temperature during breaks. A cab that's been sitting in the sun can hit dangerous temperatures
Sun Protection Matters More Than You Think Drivers get significant sun exposure through the left window. Sunscreen on your arm and face, a good pair of UV-blocking sunglasses, and a hat are easy habits that add up over a long career.
Watch What You're Eating Heavy, greasy meals hit harder in the heat. Lighter options, fruit, nuts, sandwiches, keep your energy steadier and won't weigh you down behind the wheel. Foods with high water content, like cucumbers and watermelon, double as a hydration boost.
Check Your Medications Some common medications, including certain blood pressure and allergy drugs, can increase sensitivity to heat or reduce your body's ability to sweat. Worth a conversation with your doctor before summer gets into full swing.

Long Time Trucker Writes Book on the State of American Trucking Industry

Is there a quiet war being waged against America’s truck drivers?
That’s the argument behind End of the Road: Inside the War on Truckers, a new book by longtime driver and writer Gord Magill. Magill claims the industry that once represented freedom and independence is being attacked on all fronts, from government regulations, in cab surveillance technology, corporate consolidation, and the push toward autonomous trucks.
God Magill has decades of experience including 4 seasons on ice roads in Canada, road trains in Australia, and over the road in the US. He argues that drivers today face tighter control, shrinking margins, and a future where human truckers may be pushed out altogether.
If you drive a truck, have driven, or have a family member who drives then this book is a must read.
