The Big Thing
What Is a Chameleon Carrier, and Why Should You Care?
On April 12, CBS's "60 Minutes" aired a 15-minute investigation into what the trucking industry calls chameleon carriers. The segment brought national attention to a term most of the public had never heard of, but that drivers, carriers, and regulators have been discussing for years.
A chameleon carrier is a trucking company that closes down after accumulating safety violations, then relaunches under a new business name, new ownership on paper, and a new USDOT number. Under a new DOT number, the prior safety record does not carry over. According to the investigation, registering a new carrier takes roughly 21 days and costs about $1,000. The current FMCSA registration system is approximately 40 years old.
The segment focused on Super Ego Holding, a network of trucking and leasing companies with operations in the U.S. and Serbia. According to DOT data cited in the report, carriers connected to the network have logged nearly 15,000 safety violations and roughly 500 accidents over the past two years. The company is currently under federal investigation and named in a class action lawsuit involving more than 800 drivers.
In a press release issued April 14, Super Ego called the report "misleading" and described itself as "a U.S.-based leasing company committed to transparency, compliance, and high standards of professional conduct." The company stated that every allegation in the segment was derived from what it called a central misunderstanding of its business model, maintaining that it is an equipment leasing company and not a motor carrier, and that it is not responsible for the actions of affiliated carriers or independent drivers.
FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs acknowledged the enforcement gap on camera, noting the agency has about 350 investigators overseeing all 700,000 carriers. Barrs said FMCSA is hiring 40 additional investigators and plans to roll out a modernized registration system this year. He confirmed Super Ego is part of an ongoing investigation.
The segment reached a prime-time national audience and has generated significant reaction across the industry. For drivers, fleets, property operators, and anyone connected to freight, it's worth understanding what this term means, how the registration process works, and where the regulatory conversation is headed.

Stay Off The Ramp

Highway ramps aren't truck parking. They're 70 mph traffic with no buffer, no lighting, and no protection. Every night, drivers end up there anyway. We’re ending that.

Ceasefire Holds, But Hormuz Is Still a Question Mark
The two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran announced April 8 is still technically in place, but the Strait of Hormuz remains far from normal. Only a handful of non-oil vessels have passed through since the truce began, and Iran reportedly lost track of mines it planted in the strait, complicating reopening efforts. A new 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon was announced April 16 in an effort to stabilize the broader situation. Oil prices dropped sharply after the initial ceasefire announcement but remain well above pre-war levels. EIA is forecasting diesel to peak above $5.80/gallon this month, with a national average of $4.80/gallon for the full year. No clear timeline for relief.
FedEx Freight Goes Independent June 1
FedEx Freight held its first investor day on April 8 ahead of its planned June 1 spinoff from FedEx Corp. The new company will trade on the NYSE under the ticker FDXF as the largest standalone LTL carrier in North America, operating roughly 365 locations with 30,000 vehicles. Incoming CEO John Smith outlined a strategy focused on premium freight segments and told investors the company is targeting 12% operating margins on $8.7 billion in revenue. For the broader freight market, this is the biggest structural change in LTL since Yellow shut down.

Diesel Expected to Peak This Month
EIA's April Short-Term Energy Outlook projects diesel prices will peak above $5.80 per gallon this month before gradually declining through the rest of the year. The national average is forecast to land around $4.80/gallon for 2026 overall. The spike is driven by disrupted Middle East oil flows following the Strait of Hormuz closure in late February. Gasoline and diesel prices are up 31% and 41% respectively since the start of hostilities, according to the IEA. U.S. refineries are running at near-peak capacity, but global supply constraints continue to push costs higher.
Freight Market Continues to Tighten
Dry van costs are now projected to rise roughly 17% year over year, with refrigerated costs up about 16%, according to C.H. Robinson's April market update. Tender rejections are elevated, capacity is contracting, and driver supply is tightening at its fastest pace in years. DOT Roadcheck Week (May 12-14) is expected to add short-term disruption on top of an already constrained environment. Spot rates remain materially higher year over year, but demand is still uneven across sectors. The market is firming, but it's not a boom.
